Become a Thought Leader
A “thought leader” is someone who has positioned themselves as an expert in a given profession, interest, or business. Being a thought leader on LinkedIn has tremendous advantages to help you gain better clients and more of them. You get hired to speak at events and your business flourishes. If you’re wondering how you could become viewed as a thought leader by your peers, you’re in the right place. LinkedIn is the perfect platform for you too!
Think about the thought leaders you may know of, like Gary Vaynerchuck for instance, or Tony Robbins.
Why do you think of them as thought leaders?
Is it because someone just told you that they were? Probably not! It’s because every time you turn around you see a book or video that Gary or Tony did. In online marketing terms, it’s because they have an amazing amount of content online that consistently builds the idea that they’re thought leaders and reinforces that idea.
You can do the same yourself, and you can do it on LinkedIn! As a matter of fact, LinkedIn is the perfect place to become a thought leader, if you’re a business person. Why? Because it is the business platform display your professional insights!
Here are a few things you need to get into place and consistently do in order to establish yourself as a thought leader.
1. Be yourself!
Thought leaders are first and foremost leaders! People need and are looking for guidance in various parts of their lives, be those career, relationships, health, or finances. In order to lead, you need to be a leader not a follower, and being who you authentically are is priority number one.
2. Create a lot of content consistently
You need quality content, a lot of it!
You need status updates, blog posts, LinkedIn pulse posts, probably once a week. And then there is YouTube, SlideShare and other platforms that integrate easily with LinkedIn. People need to feel like they “see you everywhere”. The only way to do this is to have a lot of content out there—everywhere.
3. Start a Group on LinkedIn
Groups are wonderful for people with common interests. If you’re going to create what Seth Godin calls a tribe, you need some way for them to communicate, get excited, and generally identify each other and identify themselves as part of the tribe. You have to be careful with groups on LinkedIn. You don’t want them to become “spam fests”, but that’s easily doable. Just monitor the group, and if someone starts treating it like their own person referral machine, just boot them out!
Follow these three steps consistently, and you’ll start to see the glorious results that all thought leaders see!

Here are a couple more ideas
Try to pick a “niche” or for lack of a better word, that has less competition. Go narrow and deep, not broad. Also, realize this is a marathon, not a sprint! Something like this isn’t happening overnight. Plan to take a year or two to get where you want to go. That’s a long time, sure, but think of what you’ll have when you get there!
Also, consider cross-promoting your content and reusing it on other platforms like Twitter and Instagram. There’s a battle going on in cyberspace for eyeballs and to win that battle, you need content and a lot of it!
The content can't be yesterday’s news or something that’s been repeated forty million times online. You can’t farm this out. You’re going to have to do it yourself from the beginning unless you have a huge marketing budget and can afford to hire a marketing company.
Being a thought leader is a good thing! With thought leadership, they make more money, get more business, have bigger mailing lists, and in general have more influence. In today’s Internet governed business world, I’d almost venture to say that you can’t reach your potential without becoming a thought leader. So, if that’s true, and I think it is, how does one do this?
Well, the good news is that you can do this right on LinkedIn. And, guess what else? There is no bad news!
